UNICEF_EU: Education in East Sudan
There is little point in providing a child with the opportunity to go to school if the quality of the education is so poor that the child will not learn. Quality education, which is essential to real learning and human development, is influenced by factors both inside and outside the classroom. It ranges from the use of learner centred teaching by teachers, availability of learning and recreational supplies and qualified teachers to child friendly schooling facilities including water and separate sanitation facilities for both boys and girls. For UNICEF, quality education ensures that every child can achieve his/her full potential. UNICEF with support from the European Union has assisted in the provision of quality basic education for some 50,000 thousand children in Eastern Sudan and thi...

Education is Making a Difference in South Sudan | UNICEF USA
Even before the conflict broke out in 2013, the education system in South Sudan was struggling: there were not enough schools, not enough trained teachers and no national curriculum. With the conflict, more and more children were forced to drop out. Teachers were forced to leave schools to look for alternative sources of income.
In 2013, the United Nations established civilian protection sites in Juba, Bentiu and Malakal. UNICEF launched emergency education activities to care for and protect children from abduction, militia recruitment and sexual exploitation. Schools were established at every site. They were immediately filled with the voices of young children, most of whom never had been to a school before.

It's the same for hundreds of thousands of refugees who've fled to neighbouring countries.

Educating Girls in South Sudan | EWTN News In Depth
In the region of Rumbek in South Sudan, a special school has been opened by the Loretto Sisters which aims to empower young women through education. Traditionally in South Sudan, girls are not seen worthy of an education as they are given in marriage in exchange for cows. The more cows a family has, the better off they are. Loretto Sister, Orla Tracey, is trying to change this trend in the rural area of Rumbek by encouraging girls to get secondary school education and go on to have careers. Colm Flynn brings us this report.
Hosted by Montse Alvarado, EWTN News In Depth welcomes guests in a discussion of current events in the Church, politics, and culture, all through the lens of the Catholic faith.
This show is about finding out who we are as people and as Catholics, and how we can confid...
